HAWAIIAN VOLCANO OBSERVATORY CURRENT STATUS REPORT

USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO) scientists conducted a helicopter overflight of the June 27th lava flow today and mapped its perimeter. At the time of the flight, the leading tip of the flow was moving sluggishly about 600 m (0.4 mi) upslope from Highway 130 near the Pāhoa police and fire stations. Breakouts were scattered across the interior and edges of the flow from the front to about 3 km (2 mi) upslope, widening the flow. Other breakouts were observed in the area just north of the True/Mid-Pacific well pad about 8 km (5 mi) upslope from the tip of the flow, and along the tube in an area 4 to 6 km (2.5 to 4 mi) downslope from Puʻu ʻŌʻō.
