[californiadisasters] 23rd Anniversary of Highway 41 Fire



Twenty-three years ago today in its second day, the Highway 41 Fire exploded into a firestorm of epic proportions threatening all communities adjacent to the Santa Lucia Range in San Luis Obispo County bounded by US 101 & Hwy 41 & Hwy 1, to wit, Morro Bay, Atascadero, Santa Margarita, and San Luis Obispo & smaller communities in between, knocking out power to much of the county and closing down US 101 and Hwy 41 for a few days. Below is an amazing home video I found this morning on Vimeo showing it from the Atascadero perspective which is where I lived at the time. All of us there at the time will never forget where we were at the time and what we were doing in response to it. For a time it seemed it would roll right into Atascadero which is a National Arbor City and thus has thousands of trees. 48,354 acres burned and about four dozen dwellings. It burned 24,000 acres in a 4-hour period during the peak of the firestorm which you can watch forming below and features a lot of air tanker action:
