Kiwis can now get details about earthquakes through Google services on their phone and computer.

Google Public Alerts will be triggered by moderate quakes that are likely to have been widely felt.  The alerts will be available minutes after an earthquake occurs, and can be updated multiple times as more data becomes available.

The information will appear as notifications on smartphones via the Google App, and can be accessed through Google Search and Google Maps on mobile or desktop.

The alerts will include the time of the quake, epicentre, magnitude and shaking intensity supplied by GNS Science.

Ross Young from Google New Zealand said the alerts would help people make informed decisions in times of crisis.

"Recent disasters here and overseas have shown us how important smartphones have become in disaster response. Google Public Alerts will inform New Zealanders which areas are affected, and let them know what to do next, via an authoritative source"  Young says.

Kevin Fenaughty from GNS Science said teaming up with Google will ensure more New Zealanders and visitors can access the right information, when and where they need it.

"Globally, mobile technology is proving to be the most effective and efficient means of reaching and informing the public following a natural disaster.

"It's fantastic to work with Google to make our earthquake information even more widely accessible, not just to New Zealanders but for visitors to our country as well," said Fenaughty.
