CAIRO: An earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale struck Cairo and Egypt's Delta governorates in the early hours of Saturday, according to the National Research Institute of Astronomy & Geophysics (NRIAG.)

The earthquake occurred at 1:34 a.m. local time and lasted for 10 seconds, was recorded at a depth of 50 kilometers below the seabed and was centered 450 kilometers to the north of Egypt's Mediterranean governorate of Matrouh, head of NRIAG Abu el-Ela Amin was quoted by Youm7 Saturday.

"No injuries, casualties or damage to the infrastructure have been reported as a result to the earthquake so far," according to Amin.

On October 12, 1992, Egypt was hit by a destructive earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale. It was centered in the town of Dahshour, 30 kilometers south of Giza Pyramids and it claimed the lives of at least 400 people and injured more than 3,000 others,
