Re: [californiadisasters] Fwd: More KC-10 & C-130 links over Rim Fire

The joys of hand flying a commercial aircraft. These guys were doing a wonderful job of flying the beast at the low end of it's service parameters and maintained a calm and cool demeanor in spite of all the alarms going off. That's really understanding your aircraft!

I knew about the annoying voices; altitude, landing gear etc.  It's because they are "low and slow"  and the plane thinks the pilot is attempting a landing and making mistakes.  Where's the shaddup button? :-)  It is distracting and ignoring it now means it will be less effective later because the pilot will be used to ignoring it.

You'll note the lead plane in one video asks the MAFFs to slow down but the pilot says he's already down to 150 (knots) which is pretty slow for that bird.

Thanks, Rick. That was cool! I used the video linked in that message on my blog just now... nice to know why the voice keeps saying "Landing Gear" and to put a face to the video of MAFFS 4. http://eclecticarcania.blogspot.com/2013/08/the-man-behind-maffs-4.html

Here's two email comments from those near Tuolumne City.

Finally got to talk to Preston this morning he said the fire is destroying our forest that never in our lifetime will we see it recover. He said that out at jawbone and evergreen it looks like the moon absolutely nothing green left. Now normally all us loggers and equipment operators love a good fire because of the pay and at first I have to admit I was kind of excited thinking yay maybe well make good money to finish the rest of the new house. Well now after talking to him what's the point of staying here if our forest burns up. Well have two to three years of  cleanup then there will be no work for us here at all  if our forest is destroyed our way of life is going to change!
Feeling humbled.

We are all ok , if the fire stays on the east side of HWY 108. This PDF file is an update to were the fire has burned, I think the turning point will be Paper Cabin Ridge if it breaches that ridge it can go all the way to Tuolumne City and up the drainage to Ponderosa Hills (Debbie & Dave our kids ) and all the way to Sugar Pine, Mi Wuk , Sierra Village. CDF person said that if the wind was right it could burn all the to Pinecrest on this side of the fire; on the eastside all the way to Nevada thru Yosemite it is already in the park on the northern border. We have been thru this in 1987 with the Complex fire which was only half has big as the Rim fire.
