Brawley recovering after day of quakes

BRAWLEY — Schools are closed and residents of Brawley are being asked to conserve water as the town of 25,000 people braces Monday for what could be more earthquakes following a Sunday filled with some serious shaking.
Most of the earthquake damage was minor in the small Imperial County town roughly 100 miles east of downtown San Diego.
"We had some reported damage to some structures, but it was really limited to cosmetic issues," Brawley Mayor George Nava said Monday morning.
Nava said a few small aftershocks continued to be felt on Monday.
"Hopefully, that's the end of it," he said.
The Red Cross for San Diego and Imperial counties set up a shelter for residents of about 20 mobile homes that were knocked off their base and "red tagged" as uninhabitable by the county.
No one used the shelter at the Imperial Valley College gymnasium in Imperial Sunday night, but it will remain open until all are allowed back home, a Red Cross spokeswoman said.
Classes at Brawley Union High School and several other local schools were canceled to allow a complete inspection of the facilities by a structural engineer to make sure they were safe.
Several schools had minor damage, such as cracked drywall, but all seemed fine when officials toured them Sunday afternoon, Nava said.
"I don't think many people would have sent there kids to school anyway today," Nava said. "It was pretty wild here for awhile yesterday."
The two strongest quakes, registering 5.3 and 5.5, struck early Sunday afternoon. They were preceded and followed by hundreds of other smaller earthquakes and aftershocks that could be felt in parts of San Diego County where no damage was reported.
"We're just happy there have been no reported injuries in town," Nava said. "There have been reports of busted water lines in some homes, and our public works folks are addressing those."
The shaking is coming from an area beneath the desert floor about 95 miles east of San Diego, south of the Salton Sea, in the gap between the San Andreas and Imperial faults. Scientists say such earthquake swarms could last several days.
