Washington

Activities

  • The State of Washington's State-Local Tsunami Workgroup engaged in a table top exercise using the PACIFEX 12 scenario developed by the West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center. This scenario simulates a magnitude 9.2 earthquake that occurs approximately 70 miles east of Kodiak City, Alaska. The earthquake triggers a major tsunami that will begin impacting the shoreline of Washington State within 3 hours. The purpose of the exercise is to test federal, state, and local response and evacuation capabilities, short-and long-term sheltering protocols, and issuance of 'all clear' messages to widely dispersed populations. The scenario is available at: http://wcatwc.arh.noaa.gov/exercise/
Members of this workgroup include Pacific, Grays Harbor, Jefferson, and Clallam Counties; the Shoalwater Bay, Hoh, Quileute, Quinault, Makah, and Lower Elwha Tribes; Washington State Agencies of Emergency Management, Natural Resources, State Patrol, and Transportation; Federal Partners including FEMA, NOAA, USGS and Congressional Staff Members.
  • Washingtonians will be joining millions of other west coast residents from British Columbia to California and improving their overall preparedness on October 18th at 10:18 by participating the Great Washington ShakeOut. Registration and ShakeOut drill materials will be made available during Tsunami Preparedness Week at: www.shakeout.org/washington
  • Tsunami preparedness information will be disseminated to schools, posted on state and local agency websites. Personal and neighborhood preparedness materials, including the Map Your Neighborhood Program and Prepare in a Year Program, in addition to a variety of preparedness videos are available at: www.emd.wa.gov
  • During the month of March Washington Emergency Management staff will be participating in a commemoration of the Japan Earthquake & Tsunami and tsunami preparedness event at the Seattle Center organized by the SeattleJapanRelief.org coalition and the Consulate-General of Japan in Seattle.
  • Tsunami evacuation brochures, fliers, and other public awareness materials will be widely distributed and the NEW Online Tsunami Evacuation Map Portal is available for residents, visitors, schools, and others to determine their risk simply by entering their address. The portal is accessible at: https://fortress.wa.gov/dnr/geology/?Site=tsunami_evac
