[californiadisasters] On This Date In CA Weather History (March 22)



2009: Strong onshore winds struck the mountains and deserts with gusts of 73 mph at Burns Canyon and 49 mph at Palm Springs.
Winds knocked down trees, freeway signs, and power lines in the mountains and deserts.
Two fires were reported in La Quinta, which caused damage to structures and trees.

2007: A strong thunderstorm over Lake Henshaw caused erratic winds.
Three elderly fisherman lost their lives on a boat in Lake Henshaw.

2005: Quick downpour in Merced: 0.69" fell in one hour during the afternoon.
Numerous buildings and homes flooded in downtown Merced and an awning collapsed to the weight of water on it.
Gusty winds around 40 mph also added to the problems as they caused a pump house roof and carport to suffer damage resulting in power outages when they fell on nearby lines. In Mariposa, 3.22" of rain fell in a 24 hour period resulting in flooding damage to structures.
Several creeks also overflowed in Merced, Madera and Mariposa Counties and some bridges and roads were washed away.

2004: It was 82° in Idyllwild and 93° in Victorville, each the highest temperature on record for March.

2004: Fresno reached a high of 81°.
This marked the 11th time the temperature reached 80° or better in the month of March, setting a record.

1997: An F0 tornado touched down west of McFarland.

1994: Gusts to 74 mph were recorded at Inyokern.

1992: A series of storms that started on 3.20 and ended on 3.23 brought one to five inches of rainfall and local flooding to portions of Southern California.

1975: 22.8 inches of snow fell at Truckee, with 19.0 inches of snow being reported at Virginia City, NV.

1964:
A big snow storm that started on this day ended on 3.24.
29 inches fell in Idyllwild, of which 22 inches fell on 3.24 alone (the greatest daily March snowfall on record), 26 inches fell at Lake Arrowhead, 23 inches at Palomar Mountain and 18 inches at Big Bear Lake.

1963: Strong winds blew dust around resulting in reduced visibility in Tulare County.
A series of vehicle accidents occurred on roads in 8 people being injured.
Buildings were also damaged and trees and power lines.

1962: The most intense tornado ever in Fresno County, rated an F2, touched down 5 miles southeast of the Fresno Air Terminal.
It demolished a shed and tore the roof of a barn.
A funnel cloud was also observed northeast of the airport.

1919: Coldest high temperature ever in March in Bakersfield, 45°.
