Mom's maiden name is Young...her dad, Chester Arthur Young, was a watchmaker and worked in several jewelry stores in Lake Charles.. But this was in the forties and fifties...he died in 1962. Maybe this was too long ago?  Allison

These are really part of the Francis Creek shale deposits (Pennsylvanian). Mining south of Kankakee made huge chat/clay piles that include a lot of the concretion nodules. A popular way to crack them open is to heat and then drop in cold water. Slower and safer, although more time consuming, is the freeze and thaw approach.  You can see pictures at the ESCONI site:

She didn't recognize it. Her family name is Scaife. What about your Mom's maiden name?
