[californiadisasters] Mega Rip Current Assaults 100 Swimmers

'Forerunner' waves caused dangerous rips at La Jolla

By Gary Robbins - San Diego Union -Tribune science writer

As first reported by the Union-Tribune's Susan Shroder, "More than a dozen San Diego lifeguards took part Thursday in a mass rescue at La Jolla Shores when three rip currents converged on about 100 people in the water.

"Twenty-six people had to be rescued from an area about 75 yards wide, and the rest made it back to shore safely on their own, said lifeguard Lt. Nick Lerma.

"Lerma said the incident occurred about 2:45 p.m., and the popular beach was packed at the time. Such rip-current conditions can occur suddenly, he said."
