A website that claims Christchurch's devastating earthquake was an act of God triggered by the tolerance of homosexual behaviour in the city has been denounced as ''despicable and appalling'' by New Zealand's gay and lesbian community.

The website ''Christchurch Quake'' - registered on September 20 to an address in Utah in the USA - suggests the destruction was a result of ''lesbians running loose on the South Island as if they own the place'' and general ''amoral'' behaviour.

Among other inflammatory accusations, the website alleges that the earlier September earthquake, which coincided with the start of Gay Ski Week in Queenstown, was a warning from God to ''End the Evil - or else!''.

I'm waiting any day for the signs to go up around Guy, AR regarding the number of quakes they're having, including today's 4.7. For sure, I know people at the corner markets are already saying somebody's not living right. ;-)

There's a very nice mud volcano field not far from the Salton Sea over on the southwest side.  It is in a rift setting and although not nearly as big as what this article is talking about, the field has been active for quite some time.  I understand that sometime in the 1930s there was a resort there.

[californiadisasters] Something else to worry about

By Steve Milne
Capitol Public Radio (Sacramento)

State water officials say they aren't too worried about a warm spring leading to a rush of snowmelt. But the state Department of Water Resources' Chief Hydrologist Maury Roos says there is another threat…
"The worst thing that could happen would be one of what we call these rain-on-snow storms sweeping in from the warmer parts of the Pacific - sometimes called the "Pineapple Connection..."
…or "Pineapple Express". That's what happened on New Year's Day 1997 when a series of tropical storms led to flooding in Sacramento.
But Roos says local levees should be able to handle a potential rush of snowmelt.
"There's been a lot of work going into levee maintenance and improvement in the past 10-15 years. So I really think that overall they're in better shape than they were for the last big flood."
Roos says the department will be working closely with reservoir operators who can then adjust amounts of water storage if need be.

Iranian cleric: Women who wear revealing clothing cause earthquakes

By MAIL FOREIGN SERVICE
Last updated at 8:36 PM on 19th April 2010 Women who wear revealing
clothing and behave promiscuously are to blame for earthquakes, a
senior Iranian cleric has said. Hojatoleslam Kazem Sedighi's
comments follow a warning by President Mahmoud
Ahmadinejad that a quake is certain to hit the capital Tehran and
that many residents should relocate. In a prayer sermon, the cleric
said: 'Many women who do not dress modestly... lead young men astray,
corrupt their chastity and spread adultery in society, which increases
earthquakes.' A female opposition supporter flashes the victory sign
during election rallies inTehran last year. An Iranian cleric has
claimed that an earthquake at the time was the result of protests... and
that women who are provocatively dressed can cause more quakes
Women in the Islamic Republic are required by law to cover from head to
toe. But many, especially the young, ignore some of the stricter codes
and wear tight coats and scarves pulled back to show much of their hair.
'What can we do to avoid being buried under the rubble?' Sedighi
asked. 'There is no other solution but to take refuge in religion
and to adapt our lives to Islam's moral codes. A divine authority told
me to tell the people to make a general repentance. Why? Because
calamities threaten us.'
Iran is one of the world's most earthquake-prone countries, and
seismologists have warned for 20 years that one is likely to hit Tehran,
which straddles scores of fault lines, in the near future. Some
12million people live in the city, which was last struck in 1830. Two
weeks ago President
Ahmadinejad said 'at least 5million' should leave Tehran
because of the earthquake threat. Some experts have even suggested Iran
should move its capital to a less seismically active location. Tehran
straddles scores of fault lines, including one more than 50 miles (80
kilometres) long, though it has not suffered a major quake since 1830.
In 2003, a powerful earthquake hit the southern city of Bam, killing
31,000 people - about a quarter of that city's population - and
destroying its ancient mud-built citadel. Referring to the violence that
followed last June's disputed presidential election, Sedighi said,
'The political earthquake that occurred was a reaction to some of the
actions (that took place).
'And now, if a natural earthquake hits Tehran, no one will be able to
confront such a calamity but God's power, only God's power... So let's
not disappoint God.' The Iranian government and its security forces have
been locked in a bloody battle with a large opposition movement that
accuses Ahmadinejad of winning last year's vote by fraud. Minister of
Welfare and Social Security Sadeq Mahsooli said prayers and
pleas for forgiveness were the best 'formulas to repel
earthquakes'. 'We cannot invent a system that prevents earthquakes, but
God has created this system and that is to avoid sins, to pray, to
seek forgiveness, pay alms and self-sacrifice,' Mahsooli said.

San Bruno blast: Federal hearing could affect laws

Federal investigators will convene an extraordinary, three-day public hearing this week on the deadly natural gas blast in San Bruno - an inquiry that could affect pipeline safety laws in California and around the nation.

The fact-finding hearing, which starts Tuesday in Washington, D.C., will include the sworn testimony of 10 top employees of the San Bruno pipeline owner, Pacific Gas and Electric Co., which has been under intense scrutiny.

Among the areas the National Transportation Safety Board plans to delve into during the hearing are how PG&E operates its pipelines, how it assesses threats to its system, and whether the company is sufficiently regulated by state and federal authorities.

At the same time, the safety board plans to release thousands of pages of documents gathered since the Sept. 9 blast, which killed eight people and destroyed 38 homes. The documents are expected to include lab tests on the failed pipe and transcripts of interviews.

First inquiry in 11 years

The safety board has not held a public inquiry on the safety of either liquid or gas pipelines since 2000, after two disasters killed 15 people and set in motion major changes to federal law. Pipeline safety experts and Bay Area lawmakers foresee another round of overhauls - one that may hinge in part on this week's hearing.

"It's a real opportunity to get to the technical core of the problem that occurred in San Bruno," said Assemblyman Jerry Hill, D-San Mateo, whose district includes the blast site. "What I'll be looking at carefully is recommendations that we can pursue in California as regulations to create a safer gas transmission system."

Almost 30 witnesses have been summoned to the hearing, which will be telecast online. The testimony will be divided into five panels, each with a topic area, and will follow an opening statement by lead safety board investigator Ravi Chhatre.

Although the day-to-day operations of PG&E and its regulators are a prime focus, one panel will deal with issues that have received less attention: whether blast victims and local authorities in San Bruno had enough information about the pipeline and its closeness to homes and businesses and whether they were prepared for an accident.

Re: [Geology2] New cause found for earthquakes

None of that beats the insanity of the utterly irrational national crush on Obama and resulting selection of him over Hillary for the Dem nomination to face the Republican who had no chance of winning in 2008.

If it happens to us, this is what we can expect...

LATEST: 3.05pm: The Chinese government has announced a $666,000 donation to the Christchurch earthquake appeal.

In making the $US500,000 donation, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao extended his deep condolences to New Zealand. Many Chinese students are believed buried in the CTV building.

2.40pm: A West Coast man has been detained in custody for a month after posing as a rescue worker.

Police were concerned that Jason Henry Bevington's lack of training or credentials could put the public and other search and rescue staff at risk, the Christchurch Court News website reported. He was charged with falsely representing himself as a rescue team member, and possession of offensive weapons - knives, a baton, and an axe.

2.25pm: Christchurch residents are being reminded to boil water after outbreaks of gastroenteritis.

It was likely people had got sick after brushing their teeth in water they hadn't boiled. Officials are considering chlorinating the water.

1.30pm: The ANZ fundraising appeal for quake-ravaged Christchurch stands at $1.6 million, the bank says.

1pm: The funeral for the first quake victim, five-month-old Baxtor Gowland, gets underway in Christchurch.

Crews are working to stabilise the damaged ChristChurch Cathedral, where about 22 people are believed dead.

One wall is particularly unstable and search and rescue crews can't enter until it is stablished. A large steel structure is being erected, and steel pipes are in place as immediate places of refuge for USAR staff when aftershocks hit.

12.15pm: Rugby World Cup boss Martin Snedden has called off an overseas trip because of the earthquake.

It is not yet known if RWC games will go ahead in Christchurch.

Education Minister Anne Tolley says correspondence school is being considered for students affected by the quake. Tolley is in Christchurch visiting the worst-affected schools and with 29 known to be seriously damaged, she said 10,000 to 15,000 students could be affected.

12pm: Chief coroner Neil MacLean has assured families of those killed that their loved ones are being treated with respect.

He said bodies would be released to families as soon as possible, but there had to be absolute certainty around identification before that could happen. He said in most cases visual identification was not possible, so fingerprints, DNA and dental records needed to be used.

11.45am: The HMNZS Canterbury is on its way back to Christchurch with water, medical supplies and bedding.

It also has Telecom equipment, a fuel tanker, diesel generators and 20 4WD vehicles. It left Wellington this morning and should reach Lyettelton about 6pm.

The tally stands at $5.2m, with $2m of that begin donated in the last 24 hours.

8.45am: Workplaces and schools are being encouraged to take part in a "red and black" mufti day.

The fundraiser is being planned for Friday, and those taking part are being asked to make a gold coin donation.

8.40am: About 60 properties at Clifton Hill and Redcliffs are being evacuated over concerns about cracks in the cliffs above the houses.

8.15am: At least 755 central city buildings face demolition after being "red stickered".

Inspection of all CBD buildings outside the no-go zones is complete. A further 909 buildings have been "yellow stickered", granting limited access, and 1276 buildings are "green stickered" meaning they are fine to enter.

7.30pm: Civil Defence boss John Hamilton says all options will be explored to re-house Christchurch people.

He says temporary subdivisions on the outskirts of the city could be built.
